What is a Shakti-Peeth

These are Sacred places in indian subcontinent where body parts/ornaments of Goddess Sati fell. Sati, the wife of Shiva was the daughter of Daksha Prajaapati a descendant of Brahma. Sati had married Shiva against the wishes of her father. Daksha performed a great Yagna in which he invited all of the gods and goddesses except his son in law Lord Shiva.

Humiliation of Goddess Sati & her Sacrifice

This did not deter Sati from reaching at her father’s house. She expressed her desire to Lord Shiva. He (Shiva) tried his best to dissuade her from going but Sati was unrelenting. Shiva then allowed her to go escorted by his ‘ganas’ (followers).
But Sati being an uninvited guest was not given any respect. Moreover Daksha insulted Shiva, by calumniating him. Sati became sad by her husband’s dishonour. She gave up her life by jumping into the altar of oblation-fire.

Tandav of Lord Shiva

When Lord Shiva heard about her death he became furious. He went to the place where Daksha was performing his oblation, along with his ‘ganas’ (followers). The oblation site was destroyed and Daksha was killed by his ‘ganas’.
Lord Shiva then carried the dead-body of Sati and started wandering all over the place like a lunatic. Shiva could not bear the loss of Sati & he picked up the remains of Sati's body and  started dancing ( Tandav - the celestial dance of destruction). Because of Lord Shiva’s Tandav Nritya.

Lord Vishnu’s Act to Calm Lord Shiva

The whole 3 worlds were very afraid and  Gods requested  Lord Vishnu to intervene to stop this destruction, then lord Vishnu intervened and cut up Sati's body in several pieces using his Sudarshan chakra .
Wherever her body parts of Goddess Sati fell, on the same sacred places, temples were erected to worship goddess Sati and became important centers of Goddess worship and Hindu pilgrimage. These places were called shaktipeeths. These temples are scattered all over Indian subcontinent.
