It is incredible to find that some of these temples while makes us mentally confident to face the difficulties of life also helps us to get rid of some of the chronic diseases that we suffer.

One such temple that is famous for giving relief for people suffering from nerve disorders is Sri Kamatchi Amman udanurai Sri soleeswarar Thirukovil, located in Perambakkam,Thiruvallur Dist, Tamil Nadu. The deity of this temple Soleeswarar is believed to have powers to cure such disorders and offer mental solace to the devotees.

History of the Temple

Kulothunga Sozha the 1st had constructed this temple on the banks of the Cooum river in 1112 AD. The archaeological department had discovered over 14 inscriptions at various places around the temple. Over the years the name Perumbakkam has changed into its present form Perambakkam.

Initially the temple was called as 'Kulothunga Sozheeswararamudaiya Mahadevar Temple. Now it is known as Sri Soleeswarar temple. A number of Telegu inscriptions unearthed close to the temple details the role of Vijaya Nagaram rulers in building the temple. Those inscriptions also mention about the history of the temple and the gold and other donations offered by the kings for the daily poojas and maintenance of the temple.

The construction structure of the temple

The temple is situated in the northeast part of the village Perambakkam. The south facing temple has a small gopuram at the entrance. The sannidhi of Soleeswarar is facing south. The beautiful lingam stands around three feet tall including the aavudaiyar. Nerve like patterns are found all over the Eswaran and such patterns are clearly seen during the milk and vibhuti abishekams. The Kamatchi Ambal sannidhi facing south is located close to the Sivan sannidhi. The Ambal measuring around four feet in size looks very beautiful and calm.

When you cross the gopuram, on your left you can observe Pillaiyar and Kasi Viswanathar in separate sannidhis. On the west part of the temple Murugar along with Valli and Devasena is seen in a separate small sannidhi. On the east of the temple there is a separate sannidhi for Iyyappan. As in Sabarimala the deity is made of a mixture of five metals. In between these sannidhis Navagriha and naga sannidhi's are located. On the walls of the siva and Ambal sannidhis the idols of Datchinamurthi, Durgai and Brahma are found.

The Sivan and Ambalam sannidhis reflect the Chola period constructional methods. The other sannidhi's in the temple appears to have been constructed one by one in latter years. The Sthala Viruksha of this temple is Vilvam Tree.

The unique nerve ailments curing properties of the temple is well mentioned in a poetry written by Saint Vashishta. The meaning of the composition explains that the temple located on the banks of river Cooum cures nerve related ailments, thus enabling the married couple to live for longer years. The word of mouth news of how the temple offers relief to the people suffer from Epilepsy and Osteoarthritis has enabled a number of such sufferers to offer prayers at the temple and get cured. The method of offering prayer to get cure from nerve problems

The people who suffer from nerve problems should commence their prayer on a Monday (Somavaram) and they should continue to come to the temple for six more weeks. They should come to the temple piously after taking head bath and carry two coconuts, milk, flowers and a small pocket of holy ash. The holy ash and milk brought by the devotees are poured into separate vessels for performing the abishekam. Those who have completed six weeks of their prayer need to bring tender coconut and fruits on the seventh week for performing abishekam and making panjamirtham.

The abishekams are performed in a traditional way. While pouring the milk or the holy ash over the deity Soleeswarar the nerve like patterns over the deity can be seen visibly. A traditional abishekam is performed for Kamatchi Amman. The rituals come to an end with the showing of deepa harathi after the neivedhyam. The devotees assembled at the temple were then offered holi ash, sandol, kunkumam and the powder of dried vilvam leaves, along with sweet Pongal and panjamirtham.

The method of taking the prasadam for the cure

Those who suffer from nervous problems and vowed to offer their prayer at the temple for seven weeks are given enough quantity of holy ash and vilva leave powder to use for a week. They are advised to mix a pinch of holy ash in the water meant for taking a bath and complete the bath reciting the name of Swami and Ambal. Then they must take a pinch of holy ash mixed in a cup of water in empty stomach in the morning. Before going to sleep in the night they are advised to smear the holy ash at the problematic place in their body. They must do the aforesaid procedures with the fullest faith to get cured. It is stated that a number of devotees who have completed the tasks are either fully cured or got a comfortable level of relief.

This temple receives devotees from all over the Tamil Nadu, neighbouring states in India and countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Srilanka. The temple authorities also arrange to courier the prasadam for those who could not make it to the temple. It is stated that the flag-mast of this temple was installed on his own expense by a wealthy old man from the village. He suffered from a serious nerve problem and regularly offered his prayers in a systematic way at the temple. When he got cured In order to show his gratitude to Soleeswarar he has fully paid the expenses for installing the flag mast.

On Mondays and other important days such as Somavara pradosham, normal pradosham, Kiruththigai, and Chathurthi, special poojas are performed at the temple

Reaching the temple

The temple is located around 60KM west of Chennai, 13KM South West of Thiruvallur and around 30KM east of Arakkonam. Those who travel by train need to get down at Kadambattur station and avail either bus or share auto service to reach the temple. Direct bus services are available from T.Nagar (Bus.No 591) and Koyambedu (Bus.No.591A). Buses are also available from Kancheevaram.
